Reading Comprehension

So for the last part of my project, I decided to make a reading comprehension packet for kids between 7th and 8 th grade. Since in those grade levels, kids think they know everything about the world and beyond, I decided to test these kids on my topic: Global Warmng and The lack of political action.
The story is about two polar bears and a penguin. Everything in their life was fine until a situation decided to "heat up". I hope you all enjoy!

Be Cool!
Derek

READING COMPREHENSION:

Polar Opposites

Way up in the North Pole, there were two polar bears: Penny and Poppy. Both of these bears are playful, fun, and enjoy the cold weather. Many of the days, you can find these two galloping across the open sheets of ice coated upon the North Atlantic Ocean. Penny and Poppy were living the good life.
One day though, when the two bears woke up from their long naps, Penny dashed across the ice only to realize that the ice was about to crack. “Penny! Wait! Come Back!” Poppy yelled at her. By then, it was too late. Penny fell off the ice and had trouble getting out of the freezing cold water. Poppy raced over to Penny but was cautious because he did not want to fall into the cold water as well. Penny braced Poppy with her one good paw and Poppy pulled as hard as he could to get Penny out of the water. “Thank you so much Poppy.” Penny said to him I relief.
The two of them looked around them and saw all of the ice cracking into pieces and breaking off. “What’s going on, Poppy?” “I don’t know, Penny.”
Just as the two were watching the ice melt, their trusted friend named Perksy the penguin wobbled up to them. “Well, hello friends!” “Hi Perksy.” The two polar bears said with a frown upon their face. “Well why do you two look so sad? Is there something wrong?” said Perksy with a perplexed look. “Yeah, there is! The ice is cracking and we do not know why.” “Would you like for me to research this problem?” The two bears looked at each other and immediately said, “Yes!” because they both knew that research was a good thing to do.
Perksy had the best computer in all of the North Pole and somehow laced himself to get to the internet. “I am going to a search place called Google.” He then typed in some keywords such as “poles, glaciers, melting” and up came a term called global warming. “Global Warming? What is that?” Penny said to the little penguin. “Well, according to wikipedia.org, global warming is the rise of the earth’s temperature and oceans.” “What!? A rise in temperatures? But it is too hot already?” Poppy replies, “Well the only thing that is causing the global warming is something called the greenhouse effect.” “Well what is that!?” Penny said in concern. “Well, the greenhouse effect is the effect of trapping harmful gasses in the world’s protective layer and causing the earth to heat up.” “Heat up!? No, this can not be happening.” “Well I am afraid it is.” The nerdy penguin says, “And according to this website, the United States of America is the main leaders for releasing these harmful gasses.”
Poppy looked at Penny with a serious face, “Penny, we have to do something about this, we can not keep living like this or else we won’t have any land to live on!” Penny looked on and nodded, “You are absolutely right!” “Perksy, where does the leader of the United States live?” Perksy went back to quickly typing on his computer and up came the president’s face. Perksy looked on and said, “The president of the United States is George W. Bush. He lives in Washington D.C. in a big white house…guys?” Perksy quickly turned around and saw that neither Poppy nor Penny were around.
Penny and Poppy were straight off to the United States Capitol to see the president face to face. Within a week, the two polar bears survived the long swimming to America. The two big sweating polar bears were exhausted as they marched up to the gates of the white house. The guards at the gate were terrified with the sight of Poppy and Penny. “Excuse me, but is this the White House where the president lives?” One guard fainted after hearing what Poppy had said. The other quickly opened the gate and ran for his life. “Thank you!” Penny said as the guard took off across the road.
When the two entered the house, they saw a couple little kids and went up to them and asked, “Do you know where the president is?” Many of the kids started to run and scream after seeing Poppy’s huge teeth, but one brave child tugged on Penny’s fur and said, “The president is in that room, polar bear.” “Well thank you little human.” Penny says. The two barged into the office of the president. The president dropped all the files in his hands and ran underneath his desk and yelled, “Please! Don’t hurt me! Take whatever you want, just please don’t eat me!” Penny and Poppy just looked at each other. “But Mr. President, we don’t want to eat you, we just want to talk.” The president peaked his head out from underneath his desk, but was still frightened, “I didn’t think that panda bears could talk.”
Poppy than rushed up to his desk and gritted his teeth, “First of all, sir, we are not panda bears. We are polar bears. My name is Poppy and this is Penny.” “Hi, Penny.” the president says as he cautiously waves at the other polar bear. “And secondly!” Poppy says after Bush coddles back under his desk, “we heard you were a little bit slow, so I can understand if you didn’t think we could talk.” Poppy says as both have a seat near the president’s desk. The president slowly gets up from under his desk, “How can I help the two of you?” “Well Mr. President.” Penny says, “We have a problem up in the north pole. All of the ice is melting up there and we don’t have anywhere to walk. We can’t swim all the time.” The president looks at Penny and asks, “Well, what will happen if I do not do anything at all?” Poppy looks in disgust and yells, “Then we all die! Don’t you understand that?” “Ok, ok! Just please don’t hurt me. What would you like me to do?” “You’re the president!” says Penny, “you’re supposed to know what you are doing!” President then goes up to his window, “I am sorry, but I am going to have to ask you two to leave.” Poppy and Penny then look down in cheerlessness. Penny leaves slowly but surely, but Poppy turns to the president just before he leaves, calmly he says, “Mr. President, all we are asking is for you to help us with our situation. Not only will you save us, but you will save the world. Don’t you want to be a president known for saving the world?” Poppy shuts the door quietly as the president, touched by his words, stares out the window onto the surrounding environment.
A couple weeks later, the two polar bears are back at the North Pole, as soon as they get back to their little patch of ice, Perksy runs up shouting, “Hooray! You guys did it! Hallelujah!” Penny looks at Poppy in confusion, “What do you mean we did it?” Perksy motions both the bears over to his computer. “Look at this article!” “We can’t read, Perksy.” “Oh, I’m sorry, I forgot.” Perksy clears his voice, “After much speculation in recent debates, President George W. Bush comes to Japan to announce the ratifying of the Kyoto protocol.” “Kyoto protocol? What’s that?” Penny says “it’s a signed agreement among different countries to reduce carbon emissions...” Poppy interrupts “In English please, Perksy!” “It’s an agreement among the world to help stop global warming!” Perksy says in excitement. “Penny smiles and looks at Poppy, “Did we do it?” Poppy slowly begins to grin, “Yes! We did it, Penny! We did it!” The two jumped around for hours playing in the water which would soon be turned back in ice.

QUESTIONS:
What are the three characters names and what kind of animals are they?
Where do they live?
What is happening to the North Pole in the beginning of the story?
What is global warming?
What country is the main producer of harmful gasses?
Who is the president of the United States?
What is the Kyoto protocol?
What are some ways you can help the environment?

Timed Writing

during class today, we did a timed writing...and here is what I wrote, ENJOY!!

Timed Writing: Project Three
My topic for project three deals with global warming and the lack of political action done by congress. I used five references in order to add the certain zest on my paper in order to get my message across. There are some various ways in order to establish this message and get positive feedback and possibly persuade some opinions.
In order to distribute my topic across the world, why not use no other tool than the worldwide web. During our project, we created a blog. A blog is an online journal that can be reviewed by anyone online. My blog consist of my research paper, and some other tools. The research paper is the main point to my entire concept of global warming. It consists of six paragraphs, a refutation and of course a conclusion. This paper took me nearly three weeks in order to write and all of my physical and emotional effort was put into this essay.
Some of these tools are a few organizations that advocate my research topic. I decided to write to these organizations. I told them that they have my support 100 percent of the way. These letters were also posted on my blog and received a few comments. These letters had professional headings and consisted f all my contact information in order to hopefully have discussions in the not too distant future.
While making this blog, I wondered on ways I could reach out to the youth of the world in order for the children to grasp my opinion on the lack of political action done to prevent global warming. After some brainstorming, I decided to give some fifth graders a reading comprehension story. The story is about two polar bears at the north pole who go on a journey to Washington D.C. in order to discuss with the president on what he needs to do in order to keep the polar bears from being on the verge of extinction. At the end of this story, I listed three questions in order for the students to grasp global warming.
I personally thought that the three texts that I used, the blog, the letters, and the reading comprehension packet are some good starting point in order for the world to hear my voice. The reading comprehension packet for the fifth graders may be a little more difficult for the kids to understand since global warming is such a tough topic to grasp. I sure do hope that the organizations that I have composed letters to decide to send me some information back, or possibly feedback on my blog. They must be extremely impressed with my efforts in order to let the world know that I want to be it’s caretaker, since no one in D.C. really wants to be.

Organizational Letters

Hello All! I have just finnished my drafts for my letters to send out to my three linked organizations...tell me what you think!!!

Letter to GASP (Group Against Smog and Pollution):

Dear Rachel,

I am a 19 year-old student enrolled at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. I am currently taking a class called analytic and persuasive writing. This class requires me to write a research paper on a topic that I am truly interested in. After some critical thinking, I came across the idea to write about global warming and the lack of national political action. While doing research for this topic, I came across your website: Group Against Smog and Pollution. I am truly moved by your wishes in order obtain a substantial, clean air living environment for the public. For the past 38 years, your group has truly been an asset to western Pennsylvania community.
My purpose for writing was the goal to obtain some more information on your group. I also wish that GASP would propose its ideas, values and standards nationally. Seeing GASP make a countrywide impact would really be something for me, and for the area of western Pennsylvania. One of your methods for achieving your mission’s goal was to be involved responsibly; I believe you are letting a great chance slip away if you do not act and act quickly on the Bush Administration. If GASP can receive many awards from such prestigious resources such as TIME, United Nations Magazine and Wall Street Journal, than it can accomplish the ability to lobby for clean air in this country. Thank you for your time.
Take Care,

Derek Hall

Letter to Campus Greens:

Dear Sam,
I am a 19 year-old student enrolled at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. I am currently taking a class called analytic and persuasive writing. This class requires me to write a research paper on a topic that I am truly interested in. After some critical thinking, I came across the idea to write about global warming and the lack of national political action. While doing research for this topic, I came across your organization: Campus Greens. I must say it is well appreciated to see what kind of good you are doing for all the student body in the nation. While all of the certain issues your organization wishes to address are considered necessary, I am truly interested on what issues your organization faces against the environment.
I am writing to ask for more information on your community of students and what the organization plans on doing to address the issue on global warming. If you could write back and explain what differences I could make towards the green party, I will be well appreciative towards your kind motives. I sure do hope you will respond and thank you for your time.

Take Care,

Derek Hall

Letter to Environmental Defense:

To Whom it May Concern:
I am a 19 year-old student enrolled at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. I am currently taking a class called analytic and persuasive writing. This class requires me to write a research paper on a topic that I am truly interested in. After some critical thinking, I came across the idea to write about global warming and the lack of national political action. While doing research for this topic, I came across your website: Environmental Defense. While looking through your website, I realized how informative and how influential your website is to the general public. This website can give the facts to the reader without any sort of affiliation or nonsense to go with it. The steps the defense is taking towards the betterment of the environment is outstanding. Not enough can be said about helping Federal Express put out hybrid trucks in order to still be efficient in the postal service, but also fuel efficient.
The reason I am writing is to ask for more information on your program and what the defense plans on doing to influence the white house that global warming is happening and action against the issue needs to be provided. I hope that you write back and I thank you for your time.

Take Care,

Derek Hall

Conquering Cataclysmic Climate
Is it me or is it hot in here? Unfortunately, George W. Bush needs to be asked this question and about his beliefs of global warming. The human impacts that cause the greenhouse effect and warm the planet can be referred to as “Global Warming” which leaves some messy results to our environment. Carbon emissions have been substantially high in present day since the industrial revolution and has the society as a whole, worried about the future of the atmosphere. Not enough is being done in order to prevent the affects of global warming, even when the facts are present. Thanks to global warming, the ozone layer around the mid-latitudes of Earth is being depleted by greenhouse gases. Global warming affects the places, the activities, and the other values that all people cherish and enjoy. Global warming and the lack of political action is a problem that needs to be addressed with evidence and supportive facts.
To start off, evidence is needed to show the public that the global climate is changing. History illustrates climate change. In pre-modern times of the Earth's history, scriptures have been written about mountain glaciers that were more extensive and winters that brought worst conditions than those of present day. Even though evidence needs to be measured accurately and scientifically for this topic, evidence is visible in ancient civilizations. Sediments were taken in a Lake in Mexico, where ancient Mayans used to rule, and a period around 800 A.D. has shown that the lake was the driest it has even been in 8,000 years (Burroughs 127). These observations and examples shows the world citizens how climate change can affect the planet in which people have built habitats. The industrial revolution is a prime series in history in which carbon emissions in the atmosphere almost doubled thanks to human impact. Without significant interference by humans, one may expect the carbon cycle to achieve a balance in which carbon concentrations and exchange rates of CO2 would stay about the same over long periods of time (Balling Jr. 20). The evidence of global climate change is evident in any time scale. Evidence, data, and numerous observations lead to a single conclusion: global warming is unmistakably obvious.
With the present day changes going on in today's world, the consequences can be rather drastic. At the rate in which global temperature is rising, GFDL, The Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, believes that the tropical cyclone output will increase and create more deadly cyclones. The GFDL has this to say as an overview of the lab’s research on global warming and Hurricanes, “The strongest hurricanes in the present climate may be upstaged by even more intense hurricanes over the next century as the earth's climate is warmed by increasing levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere”. Global warming can create a drought throughout the world which will fluctuate the price for crops. Not only will drought lead to economic impacts to the agriculture, but can also lead to world hunger, as if that problem is already colossal concern. Extreme changes in climate can also lead to possible human depletion. There is also speculation that warmer weather will bring a surge of malaria or bacterial diseases to hotter areas of the world, potentially devastating human health (Cohn). So global warming can have an economic, medical and a geostatic change to the world and have a massive impact to the human society.
So after looking at the evidence of global warming and the impacts of global warming, you might wonder what political actions are being done to deplete the affects of global warming. President Bush dismisses environmental report on global warming created by his own administrations. Not many actions can be made against global warming when the administration in power can not find common ground in global issues. It's not every day, after all, that the leading scientists from 120 nations come together and agree that the entire planet is about to go to hell (Dickinson). Bush does not allow United States to ratify the Kyoto protocol which would decline the amount of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere (U.S Rejection of Kyoto Protocol Process 650). Even when ideas are presented to him and his administration, the cabinet still declines to go forth with possible preventions of global warming. Bush has political ties and special interest in many corporate industrial and oil companies. Global warming may not be the first thing on the president's mind when Bush has nearly millions of dollars invested in domestic and overseas oil companies. Action looks to be non-visible around Washington D.C. when global warming is the topic on the president's agenda. The president and the administration in power are supposed to be the leaders of the nation, and do the right things, but they are lacking the political action.
While it may be true that global warming has negative affects on our planet, some positive influences come into play according to Aaron Wildavsky. A carbon rich environment in which carbon as an immense fertilizer that not only vastly increases plant and tree growth but also and simultaneously vastly reduces the need for water (Wildavsky xxvi). The plant environment and the ecosystem in which we live in will be out of harms way if global warming were to cause a two or three degree Celsius increase in our global temperature. The Bush Administration withdrew the United States from the Kyoto Protocol because of the possible long term effects the protocol could have on the nation's economy (U.S Rejection of Kyoto Protocol Process 649). Without a doubt, the economy will maintain at a rather dominant continuation and develop a higher standard of living for most United States Citizens. In Britain alone, scientist estimate between 20,000 and 40,000 deaths a year are related to cold winter weather (Cohn). An increase in global temperature will decrease the dreadful freezing temperatures of winter in Britain and possibly reduce the number of deaths related to cold winters in Britain. Taking a look from both sides of the box of perception is a beneficial thing when analyzing a problem. Not everything is bad about the issue. There can be some silver lining in the dark cloud of global warming.
When looking through data, it is evident enough that there is not enough being done in order to prevent the affects of global warming. With the ozone being depleted, carbon emissions rising, and the greenhouse effect becoming more perceptible, President Bush needs to be asked what he plans on doing with this country when 2nd degree sunburns become common in society. Studies show that global climate change is evident even in times in which technology could not measure climate change. With these climate changes, economic and environmental impacts will come at its chaotic pinnacle. Even when these changes are visible, perceptible and things can be done to prevent this disaster; recommended actions are not processed by our ruling administration. Though there is evidence about negatives of the issue, some positives are found in global warming. Not every issue can be tackled in a short term of presidency. The values in which we look at our environment and society today need to be questioned and planned out in order to keep the world in which people lived in preserved from the historical changes. Now is never to late to do your part in order to keep the planet safe. Action must be taken in order to prevent the world from going into a chaotic climate of disarray.
